The tents are coming down, the lights have dimmed and people are nursing their energy-drink-and-vodka hangovers. Winter X Games 16 has come and gone, and Aspen is still unsure if it will ever return.
On the hill, highlights included the first-ever front-flip on a snowmobile (Heath Frisby), a perfect run in the snowboard superpipe (Shaun White), and a tear-jerking and inspiring tribute to Sarah Burke.
Here are some highlights that ESPN didn’t report.
– Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush on the turntables at Escobar during the Red Bull athlete party on Saturday night.
– DJ Trouble Andrew, who broke it down up top the Sundeck during the Monster-sponsored party on Saturday. (Rumor has it, that his girlfriend, indie hipstress Santigold, was in tow).
– Deadmau5 tickets that were scalped online for $600 were suddenly going for $20 minutes before the show.
– Temporary tattoos are for sweet 16 parties; X Games are for life. The rum brand named in honor of legendary tattoo artist Sailor Jerry set up shop in a poolside room at the Sky Hotel. Blood was shed, ink was laid, and relationships were lost.
– Co-eds who were promised VIP status the night before found themselves standing out in the cold with the masses waiting to get into Eric’s.
– Be gone brown and black, neon and sparkles are here. Crowd panoramas looked like packages of Nerds and after-party patrons flaunted New Year’s-style attire. (Yes, spirit hoods were in full force too).
– Never-seen-before Bob Marley prints, which peppered the Marley Safehouse on the Hyman Ave. mall.
– For the first time ever at X Games, Tanner Hall was seen not dancing on tables or ranting on about about God knows what.
– Colorado Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilley and his entourage popping bottles with some hotties from our northern neighbor at Escobar on Saturday.
– Red Bull custom vehicles took over Aspen like an 1979 Australian dystopian action film starring Mel Gibson. Vodka, any and every vodka, is up for best supporting role in anything starring Red Bull.
– After Chromeo cancelled for ESPN’s party at Belly Up on Saturday, who else would you expect to pull through besides the steadfast Barenaked Ladies? Word is they were entertaining and made people laugh.
