X GAMES: THE PODIUM HUNT

Winter X Games 12 sees lots of new names and faces, but tons of old ones too. (Cue Shaun White and Gretchen Bleiler). But, if you’re curious about who to watch that will bring home gold, here are our picks:

Snowmobile:

With Levi Lavalle out for injuries, 2010 champ Justin Hoyer is looking to step in and reclaim his spot on the podium in freestyle. (Thursday p.m.)

Heath Frisby is expected to try a front flip on a 450-pound chunk of metal. If he lands it, there’s celebration. If he doesn’t, there’s carnage. With six Winter X Games medals to his name, he has the brass to go for best trick. (Sunday p.m.)

Ski:

Tom Wallisch has won both Dew Tour slopestyles this season, but has yet to capture X Games gold. You can bet it’s at the top of his list. (Thursday p.m.)

Hometown favorite Torin Yater-Wallace is only 16, but after a stunning silver medal win last year, he’s hungry for gold in the superpipe. (Saturday afternoon)

After the tragic loss of champion and icon Sarah Burke, women’s superpipe will be a somber affair. Still, the competition between Brita Sigourney and Maddie Bowman should make for an interesting showdown.  (Saturday afternoon)

Go big or go home, and that’s just what Bobby Brown will do in big air. With the first-ever perfect score in X Games history, he’ll be gunning for gold after taking second in last year’s comp. (Saturday p.m.)

Surprisingly, the 30-man field in skier x is without injury.  John Teller will surely want to stay on top, after passing Chris del Bosco in the final seconds for Olympic gold last year. (Sunday afternoon)

Snowboard:

Kelly Clark has won the last 11 competitions in which she’s competed. What’s going to stop her this time in superpipe? (Friday p.m.)

After landing a triple invert to take home gold last year, Torstein Horgmo is back to defend his title in the big air. (Friday p.m.)

Spencer O’Brien earned No. 1 at the Breckenridge Dew Tour earlier this year, and she’s coming to Aspen to take another Colorado podium in slopestyle. (Friday afternoon)

When Lindsey Jacobellis tore her ACL on Wednesday in snowboarder x practice, it opened up for the field for 2010 Olympic gold medalist Maelle Ricker to step up. (Saturday afternoon)

Bring it on, Norway. Defending champ Sebastien Toutant will be tough to beat, but with six competitors in the field the Norse have a chance in slopestyle. (Saturday p.m.)

The Flying Tomato will go for the five-peat, but “Dancing with the Stars” competitor and X Games veteran Louie Vito will be on Shaun White’s tail with back-to-back double corks for a first place in superpipe. (Sunday p.m.)
